April 14, 2004

Dravets Syndrome
             (severe seizure disorder)

Bryant was just 3 months old when he experienced his first seizure.  His eyes rolled backwards, his lips turned blue, and he began to jerk uncontrollably.  He has since suffered more seizures than his mom can count.  He  even went into status epilepticus for 2 hours and 45 minutes.  He eventually quit breathing.  His mom Amy  writes, "Its a terrible feeling when you have to do CPR on your own child."

The family has raised about half of the $9,800 needed to get their son a seizure alert dog, which can sense when a child is about to experience a seizure.

The middle of the night is the worst time for Amy and her husband, Jason, a coal miner. "I always worry something will go wrong and I won't wake up."

After visits to doctors in Evansville, St. Louis, Indianapolis, the Mayo Clinic and finally Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Bryant was diagnosed in June of 2006 with Dravet's syndrome. He's one of about 500 confirmed cases of this rare disorder.

Bryant has an eleven year old sister, Chantele (born 7-18-95).
