Here's David's updated story, as written by his mom:
David was diagnosed with Pseudotumor Cerebrii/Intracranial
Hypertension on April 15, 2009. He was going blind
in both eyes, due to the increased spinal fluid.
This caused him to have horrible migraines. He has
Lumbar punctures to relieve the pressure in his
spine, which keeps the pressure out of his brain and
helps his eyesight.
In addition, he has Epilepsy,
Autism, Sleep disturbance, Anemia, migraines, and
neurocognitive deficits. David sees multiple doctors
every month for his illnesses. He has IV iron
infusions at least monthly as well. He takes over 14
different medications daily (they change his meds
frequently). He receives speech therapy as well as
occupational and physical therapy.
David almost lost his foot to a severe staph
infection in the Spring of 2006 and continues to use
a brace and orthopedic shoes as a result of that.
He struggles with school because his working memory
is poor. He has been misunderstood by many; but
through it all, he maintains a gentle soul. He
always strives to do his best and believes the best
about others. He has made great strides in his
education these past two years, since Mom began home
schooling him, where he can learn at his own pace.
His interests have branched out. He loves
woodworking and the Explorers program for Fire
Fighters.
Because of his subtle seizures and the effects of
his necessary medications, David has difficulties
with alertness, endurance, speech, and consistency.
He must modify his life to deal with these
challenges. He is a WONDERFUL brother to his older
brother, Christian and his younger sisters, Rachel
and Lisa (also a Hugs and Hope child)
David wants to be a train engineer or pilot when he
grows up. His parents encourage him to reach for the
stars and to never give up on his dreams.
