Joshua was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic
Leukemia (ALL) in June of 2002. He had a white blood count (WBC)
of 167,400 and most of them were leukemia cells. A normal WBC is
between 4.0 and 12.0. So as you can see, Joshua's WBC was very,
very high.
On June 30 they put a central line in and performed a spinal tap.
Then he was placed on intensive chemotherapy. When Josh's blood
counts are low, he cannot be around other children. This disease
seriously affects the patient and the entire family.
If at any time Joshua gets a fever of 101.5 or above, he needs
to go to children's hospital so they can do a CBC and blood cultures.
If his ANC is less than 500, he is admitted for antibiotics.
