He's been through 15 blood transfusions
in three years. He got the first one at one day old. His condition
is rare, and his specialist says his is the worst case he's seen.
I was told that it was caused because I did not have a rhogam shot
when I had a miscarriage right before becoming pregnant with him.
I don't know if that's true. I have not had anyone to talk to when
He's in the hospital for months. I went through it all alone. I
have five other kids. It's very hard coming home when he had to
stay in the hospital and doctors are calling us in the middle of
the night saying we'd better come because they don't think is going
to make it. It's been an emotional roller coaster.
Our blood cells are round, Kevin's are spheres so they don't go
to the spleen to be cycled. They were dying off and his body wasn't
making new ones as quickly as we would; so that would make his hemoglobin
go down. His spleen has been enlarged for some time, (it's 14 inches
wide and 9 inches long!), but he could not have it removed till
age 3 or 4 because he wouldn't have an immune system to fight off
infections.
