Kimmie has been through a lot in her
short life. At eight months of age, her heart was three times the
size it should have been. Drinking a bottle for her was like running
a marathon. She had two heart surgeries.
After the second surgery, Kimmie spent six weeks in Intensive Care,
bled into her chest, and had a stroke. When she went home, she was
a different child than when she entered the hospital. Half her brain
was gone, she was having seizures, and was ultimately diagnosed
with Hydrocephalus and Cerebral Palsy. She could no longer hold
up her head or use her left side.
Over the past few years, Kimberly has learned to sit up and crawl
with one hand, but she cannot walk. Currently, she's not doing well
at all. She is having a seizure every second. Yes, you heard that
right - every second. Doctors have changed her meds and will do
a new EEG when the levels are high enough.
Kimmie had her second hip surgery in November 2001 to cut the hip
socket and pull it down. She was in a cast from the waist down for
six weeks. And she had a VNS put in this past March for her seizures.
(A VNS is a Vagus Nerve Stimulator) The device is implanted in the
chest and neck. It's like a pacemaker and is used to help control
seizures.
