Mattie was diagnosed with Klippel Feil
Syndrome, (fusion of cervical vertebrae) at six months old. She
has unilateral hearing loss, and wears a hearing aid.
This past April (2004) Mattie had spinal surgery at the Shriners'
Hospital in Philadelphia. Doctors fused her skull and the six vertebrae
in her neck. This is her second surgery this year. It will straighten
her neck and prevent her from developing any more instability.
Mattie will need to wear a "halo" at least through December.
The exact time will depend upon how quickly her body heals afte
this fusion.
Her parents believe Mattie's involvement with HUGS and HOPE will
help make her time in the halo more enjoyable. They are also hoping
to find some organization to help them with flights from Atlanta
to Philadelphia for Mattie's treatments and check ups. If you can
help in that area, please contact Mattie's family.
