When Paige was only four years old, in 1995,
she was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma. She went through a
year of chemo, radiation, and surgeries. She felt fine till
2002, when she was diagnosed with bone cancer. Doctors said it
was caused by the radiation they used to kill the rhabdo!
Paige's father died that same year from cancer,
which he'd battled many times in his life. He had breast
cancer in 1994, just before Paige was first diagnosed . Then
in 1997, he had Osteosarcoma and needed part of his jaw removed.
Then he got lung cancer and had part of a lung removed. He
died at the age of 37.
Paige's aunt (her dad's sister) died of breast
cancer when she was 25, and another aunt died from pancreatic cancer
at 35. Her grandmother died at the age of 25 from breast
cancer. Cancer has caused much heartache for this family!
Paige had been in remission till a couple months before the end of the
2007 school year when she began having various aches and
pains....and she was very tired. She visited the ER four or five
times within a couple of months. Various x-rays were done, but
nothing was found.
June 30, 2007, her mom insisted that she go to
the ER once again when Paige complained about ear pain and pain
during urination. She also had dark red spots all the way across her
bottom lip. This time, blood work was ordered.
The next thing she knew, Paige was being
life-flighted to the Cleveland Clinic and taken to the Intensive
Care Unit. All her blood counts were very low...indicating
something was seriously wrong. The spots on her bottom lip were due
to a very low platelet count of only 4. The lowest normal
number is 150!
Paige had a bone marrow aspiration and was then
told she has AML Leukemia. (This is sometimes
caused by chemo that's
used to treat primary cancers) She had a bone marrow transplant,
but her liver stopped functioning and Paige passed away June 23,
2008.
Paige battled three different cancers in her
short life. Her dad battled three cancers before he passed
away too. Her mom and sister have suffered greatly through
these horrendous battles.
Please keep Paige's family in your prayers.
